The cell cycle has two major phases:
Interphase & Mitotic phase
1. Interphase – where the cell prepares for division
2. M Phase (Mitotic phase) – where the cell actually divides
🔹 Interphase (Preparation Phase): 3 stages:
G₁ Phase (Gap 1):
The cell grows and performs normal functions. Proteins and organelles are produced.
S Phase (Synthesis):
DNA is replicated – each chromosome makes a copy of itself.
G₂ Phase (Gap 2):
The cell prepares for division by producing enzymes and proteins required for mitosis.
🔹 M Phase (Division Phase)
It includes Mitosis (nuclear division) and Cytokinesis (cytoplasm division). Mitosis has 4 stages:
Prophase: Chromosomes condense, spindle fibers form.
Metaphase: Chromosomes align at the center of the cell.
Anaphase: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles.
Telophase: Nuclear membrane reforms, chromosomes de-condense.
Then, the cell finally divides into two identical daughter cells.
