As I reflect on mathematics education, I realize its significance extends beyond formulas and numbers. Mathematics is a way of thinking, problem-solving, and logical reasoning, as aptly put by Albert Einstein- “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” I believe teaching mathematics at the school level is important because it mathematizes children’s thought processes, as stated in NCF 2005. In my experience, conventional teaching methods often prioritize instructional approaches by neglecting critical thinking and diverse solutions. I have seen how using concrete materials and hands-on experiences in the classroom allowed students to build connections and understand concepts better. This reinforces constructivist principles, where children construct knowledge through experiences and engagements. I have come to realize the importance of varied concrete materials to solidify abstract concepts.
