The cell cycle is divided into interphase (preparation for division) and the M phase (cell division). Interphase is further divided into G1, S, and G2 phases. The M phase includes mitosis and cytokinesis. Here's a breakdown of each phase: Interphase: G1 (Gap 1): The cell grows, synthesizes proteins, and prepares for DNA replication. S (Synthesis): DNA replication occurs, doubling the genetic material, and the centrosome duplicates. G2 (Gap 2): The cell continues to grow, prepares for mitosis, and makes sure DNA replication was successful. M Phase: Mitosis: Prophase: DNA condenses into chromosomes, and the mitotic spindle begins to form. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up along the center of the cell (the metaphase plate). Anaphase: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell. Telophase: Chromosomes decondense, nuclear envelopes reform around the separated chromosomes, and cytokinesis begins.
