'Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.' It merely means that it is the cell organelle responsible for the production of energy (known as ATP) in the cell. Also, the second membrane has infoldings that project into the cell matrix.
Another interesting fact: the mitochondria carry its DNA called mt-DNA. It indicates that mitochondria share an evolutionary past with prokaryotes (primitive, single-celled organisms).
