Data science is a new fad in India. Of course, there are a lot of data scientists who know exactly what they are doing (and why), but plenty of folks are blindly following the crowd, with absolutely no idea about where would it lead to. Knowing a few tools isn’t data science. A data scientist does much more than just using tools. Preparing data, cleaning it up, interacting with other teams and people to collect data form the bulk of the responsibilities of a data scientist. In addition, a strong knowledge of mathematics is generally necessary, especially probability and statistics. It is hard to comment how many people in India who are trying to make a buck by boarding the “data science” gravy train are really able to do all these things (or atleast most of these things). All that’s happening currently is that there are a few very successful people/companies who have done very well, and the rest are trying to emulate them just by copying stuff that’s available in the Internet. Data science is not for everybody. Data science is not for the weak-hearted. However, plenty of people will realize only after it is too late. By then, there will be yet another fad in the market, and people will blindly follow it. And that’s the cycle, atleast in India. read less
