To understand the concept of Speed and velocity we need to first understand what displacement and distance are. Displacement:- Overall change in position relative to the start point e.g. How much it is moved from the start point. It is a vector quantity. Distance:- How much covered in total. It is a scalar quantity. So by the above definition, Distance is always equal to greater than displacement. Let me give a small example to understand the concept clearly. Suppose you are running a 400m race in the track, distance covered is 400m & displacement is 0 because you have reached the start point and hence no change in position. Speed = Distance/time and Velocity = Displacement/time Since, Distance >= Displacement, Always Speed >= velocity. Happy learning!!! read less

Why is only the speed of light constant in all frames of reference?

The only thing that affects the speed of light is the refractive index of the medium through which it moves, and for space, this number is 1.000000 and gives you the maximum possible speed of light.
