Proteins enter golgi on the side facing the ER (cis face), and exit from the opposite face of the stack facing the plasma membrane of the cell (trance face). Proteins must make their way through the stack of cisternae and along the way become modified and packaged for transport to various locations within the cell. Region of golgi contains contains different protein modification enzymes. Golgi enzymes catalyse the addition or removal of sugars from proteins (glycosylation). The addition of sulphate groups and phosphate groups. Proteins are modified by by enzymes located in cisternae. The enzyme sequentially add the appropriate modification to the proteins. read less
