The protein is synthesized into the lumen of the ER and perhaps modified there. A transport vesicle carries the protein to the Golgi apparatus. After further modification in the Golgi, another transport vesicle carries it back to the ER.

Proteins must make their way through the stack of cisternae and along the way become modified and packaged for transport to various locations within the cell. Region of golgi contains contains different protein modification enzymes. Golgi enzymes catalyse the addition or removal of sugars from proteins (glycosylation). The addition of sulphate groups and phosphate groups. Proteins are modified by by enzymes located in cisternae. The enzyme sequentially add the appropriate modification to the proteins. read less
