Why does distilled water not conduct electricity?

Salt water contains charged particles called ions, eg- Na+, Cl-. These help in conduction of electricity. But, distilled water doesn't have any charged ions. It only has polar covalent bond between H+ and OH-, which are insignificantly polarized to conduct electricity. read less

Without the swapping of electrons, electricity is unable to travel through distilled water. Salt water, on the other hand, is considered a good conductor of electricity because it contains ions in it. Tap water, although it doesn't taste salty, can also conduct electricity because it isn't pure.
