Why does distilled water not conduct electricity?

Distilled water does not conduct electricity, because it doesn't has free charges. Electricity, is flow of charges. Without free charges, electricity is not possible. Salt water contains charged particles called ions, eg- Na+, Cl-. These help in conduction of electricity. But, distilled water doesn't have any charged ions. It only has polar covalent bond between H+ and OH-, which are insignificantly polarized to conduct electricity. read less

Without the swapping of electrons, electricity is unable to travel through distilled water. Salt water, on the other hand, is considered a good conductor of electricity because it contains ions in it. Tap water, although it doesn't taste salty, can also conduct electricity because it isn't pure.
