Hydrgen and chlorine are diatomic molecules. They are H2 and Cl2 respectively. H2 + Cl2 ---> HCl Reactants -- 1. Hydrogen = 2 H atoms (1 H2 molecule) 2. Chlorine = 2 Cl atoms (1 Cl2 molecule) Product-- 1. HCl = 1 H atom and 1 Cl atom No of atoms in reactants = No of atoms in product For that, put...

Chlorine = 2 Cl atoms (1 Cl2 molecule) Product-- 1. HCl = 1 H atom and 1 Cl atom No of atoms in reactants = No of atoms in product For that, put '2' in front of HCl (product). Read it as 2HCl. Remember '2' is common for both H and Cl. So you will have 2H and 2 Cl respectively in the product side. H2 + Cl2 ---> HCl (unbalanced/skeleton eqn) H2 + Cl2 ---> 2HCl (balanced eqn) read less
