Any time you lift an object, you do work against gravity.Work against gravity mass acceleration due to gravity = × × height

Work done by the force is positive if displacement is in direction of force but if direction of displacement is opposite to the direction of force then work done is negative .

Whenever a force is applied to an object, causing the object to move, work is done by the force. If a force is applied but the object doesn't move, no work is done. Work can be either positive or negative: if the force has a component in the same direction as the displacement of the object, the force is doing positive work. If the force has a component in the direction opposite to the displacement, the force does negative work. Consider a falling object, here force applied on object is due to gravity towards earth and the displacement of object is in the same direction as that of force applied. Hence the work is done by gravity and is positive. consider a rocket, when it is launched, the force here is thrust which works against gravity and pushes the rocket up wards. So the force applied here is in downward direction and the displacement is in upward direction. read less

If one lifts an object that is work done against gravity. When you leave that object and it falls towards the Earth from a height it is the work done by gravity.

The concept is same. If no practical losses are considered then both the works are same. The total work done will be same as gravity work done is conservative in nature.

If resulting motion is IN the direction of direction of force then positive. Negative if force is applied in the direction opposite to motion's direction. Ex. Negative work done is done while going up in sky with respect to earth.

An athlete completes one round a circular track of diameter 200 m in 40 seconds. What will be the distance covered and the displacement at the end of 2 minute and 20 seconds.
Ans: Time taken = 2 min 20 sec = 140 sec. Radius, r = 100 m. InTime to complete one round = 40 sec So, Round completed in 140 sec = 140 ÷ 40 = 3.5 (three and a half) round. Or, distance covered...
