‘Buffer stock’ or ‘strategic stock’ or ‘safety stock’ or ‘buffer inventory’ is defined as a supply of inputs held as a reserve in case there are future demand and supply fluctuations. It is the excess inventory or safety stock, which retains some kind of buffer to protect in case of uncertain future. It is a system or scheme which buys and stores stocks at times of good harvests to prevent prices falling below a target range (or price level), and releases stocks during bad harvests to prevent prices rising above a target range (or price level). It refers to a reserve of a commodity that is used to offset price fluctuations and unforeseen emergencies. It is a government plan to stabilise prices in volatile markets. read less
