Gold was chosen for particle scattering experiment as it is highly malleable( can be beaten into thin sheets) and ductile( can be drawn into thin wires). Atoms and molecules are much much tinier than sand grains. And gold was beaten into sheet width approximately 1-3 atoms size so that when tiny particles scatter, it could be observed. There are no other known metals of such malleability at that time. read less
