In a triangle if a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle intersecting the other two sides in distinct points then it divides the two sides in the same ratio.

This theorem is popularly known as BPT theorem or Basic Proportionality Theorem.

The Converse of this theorem is: If a line divides any two sides of a triangle in the same ratio then it must be parallel to the third side.
