Seriously !! i cannot understand the answer given by many people ie. -1/12 , how can the sum of positive numbers be negative first of all & how can the sum of infinite nos. be finite. Even if we remove infinity from Qn. then also the answer is infinity because the series is divergent and sum of 1+2+3+4.........infinity-2 + infinity-1 is also infinity. But if the Qn. is 1-2+3-4.............infinity then the answer can be finite. we can split the above series like this: (1+3+5+7......infinity) - (2+4+6+8.....infinity) = [n/2{2+(n-1)2}] - [n/2{4+(n-1)2}] = -n therefore by this way answer can be negative . thankyou. read less

It is infinity. The (-1/12) is a fallacy which even Srinivasa Ramanujam knew. However, his use of such results were in different contexts. Even Euler had such converging results for Diverging series.

1+2+3+.....+n= {n(n+1)}/2 , if n=infinite then sum=infinite in this series

which increases without bound as n goes to infinity. Because the sequence of partial sums fails to converge to a finite limit, the series does not have a sum. 1+2+3+4+\cdots=-\frac{1}{12}.

infinity is not a number .... Why the so called mathematicians here say sum of infinite natural numbers is infinity HOW ???? if infinity is a number than it should follow the following rule 0 + x = x ; But we know infinity + infinity = infinity doesn't it contradict 0+x = x because then infinty =0 ?...
