Yes, environment crisis is a recent phenomenon. Because earlier people did not use the earth’s resources as extensively as after the population explosion in recent times. The rate of extraction now is higher than the rate of regeneration by the environment. Also, the capacity to absorb waste by the environment naturally is insufficient in comparison to the huge amount of waste generated. Earlier, the demand was less but now with industrial revolution, to meet the growing demands of the population, Earth’s natural resources are exploited extensively. The environment has been able to perform its functions without any interruption till the resource extraction was not above the rate of regeneration of the resource and the wastes generated were within the assimilating capacity of the environment. # But today, the environment fails to perform its third and vital function of life sustenance resulting in an environmental crisis. # The rising population of the developing countries and the affluent consumption and production standards of the developed world have placed a huge stress on the environment in terms of its two functions. # Many resources have become extinct and the wastes generated are beyond the I absorptive capacity of the environment. Before industrialization, there was less demand for environmental resources as there was less population and it was able to sustain with the resources, it was surplus for the existing population. As there was less exploitation of resources so the rate of regeneration was much faster. But in the present day due to population explosion, rapid urbanization, and over-exploitation of natural resources nature is unable to replenish the stocks, which is causing an ecological imbalance that isputtingpressure on environments carrying capacity giving rise to the environmental crisis. read less
