Refractive Index is the ratio of the velocity of Light in vacuum and the velocity of light in the given medium mu = c / v

In order to understand the refractive index of a medium, then you should first understand that the speed of the light changes as soon as it enters from one to another medium. Suppose a light travels from medium 1 to medium 2. Provided the medias are different. As soon as light enters medium 2its velocity will change.so the change in velocity is just because of medium 2. So the refractive index of 2 with respect to 1 (lights is traveling from 1 to 2 say medium 1 is air and 2 is water) is the ratio of velocity of light in medium 1 is air to the velocity of light in medium 2. read less
