Why is there so much emphasis on changing over from petrol/diesel driven automobiles to CNG driven vehicles.

CNG: Compressed natural gas adds very little amount of pollutants to the air than petrol /diesel on burning with almost equal efficiency. So to prevent air pollution, use of CNG is emphasized.
