iron in its native state reacts with Oxygen in presence of water available in the atmosphere ( though slowly at ambient temepratures and pressures) forming Iron Oxide. Iron oxide forms on the surface as a thin layer and gets accumulated further changing the reacted iron to the "inorganic salt" brittle salt Iron Oxide, we call "rust". The surface of iron is therefore coated with paint which is polymer and does not react with oxygen or moisture thus preventing exposure of Iron to atmosphere. Painted or coated Iron therefore lasts longer without weakening through rust formation. read less
