Iron oxide forms on the surface as a thin layer and gets accumulated further changing the reacted iron to the "inorganic salt" brittle salt Iron Oxide, we call "rust". The surface of iron is therefore coated with paint which is polymer and does not react with oxygen or moisture thus preventing exposure of Iron to atmosphere. Painted or coated Iron therefore lasts longer without weakening through rust formation. read less
