A homologous series is a series of organic compounds which belong to the same family (i.e. possess same functional group) and show similar chemical properties. Members of a homologous series differ from each other by CH2 units. Thus alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2, and alkenes have the general...

A homologous series is a series of organic compounds which belong to the same family (i.e. possess same functional group) and show similar chemical properties. Members of a homologous series differ from each other by CH2 units. Thus alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2, and alkenes have the general formula CnH2n etc. Since they differ from each other by a CH2 unit the difference in the molecular mass is 14 amu. Also, the basic struture doesn't change (only -CH2 units are added), and therefore members of a homologue have the same chemical properties. read less
