A homologous series is a series of organic compounds which belong to the same family (i.e. possess same functional group) and show similar chemical properties. Members of a homologous series differ from each other by CH2 units. Thus alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2, and alkenes have the general...

Members of a homologous series differ from each other by CH2 units. Thus alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2, and alkenes have the general formula CnH2n etc. Since they differ from each other by a CH2 unit the difference in the molecular mass is 14 amu. Also, the basic struture doesn't change (only -CH2 units are added), and therefore members of a homologue have the same chemical properties. read less

A bag contains 5 white and 3 black balls, and 4 balls are successively drawn out and not replaced. Find the probability that they are alternatively of different colors.
it can be in two ways-( white, black, white., black.) or ( black, white, black, white). in first case, the probability is=(5/8)X(3/7)X(4/6)X(2/5)=1/14. IN SECOND CASE, IT IS=(3/8)X(5/7)X(2/6)X(4/5)=1/14. SO THE PROBABILITY IS=(1/14)+1/14)=1/7
