If there is a difference between the number of protons and electrons in an atom, it is said to be an ion.
If the number of electrons is more than the number of protons, then the ion is negatively charged (anion), electrically.
If the number of electrons is lesser than the number of protons, then the ion is positively charged (cation), electrically.
Note: protons in the nucleus of an atom are stable. Only the electrons may vary. The atoms may lose or gain the electrons from its valence shell.
