## **Cell Cycle Overview**
The **cell cycle** is the sequence of events that a cell goes through from one division to the next. It has **two main phases**:
1. **Interphase** – the preparatory phase
2. **M Phase (Mitotic Phase)** – the actual cell division
---
### **1. Interphase** *(Preparation phase; about 90% of the cell cycle)*
It has **three sub-phases**:
#### **G₁ Phase (Gap 1)**
* Cell grows in size.
* Organelles duplicate.
* Proteins and enzymes are synthesized.
* Cell is metabolically active.
* The cell decides whether to divide or not (can enter G₀ phase if not dividing).
#### **S Phase (Synthesis)**
* DNA replication occurs.
* Each chromosome duplicates to form sister chromatids.
* Centrosome also duplicates.
#### **G₂ Phase (Gap 2)**
* Cell prepares for mitosis.
* More growth, protein synthesis.
* DNA is checked for errors and repaired if needed.
* Microtubules begin to organize for spindle formation.
---
### **2. M Phase (Mitotic Phase)** *(Active division; 10% of cell cycle)*
It includes:
* **Karyokinesis**: Division of nucleus.
* **Cytokinesis**: Division of cytoplasm.
**Karyokinesis** is further divided into **four stages**:
#### **Prophase**
* Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes.
* Each chromosome has two sister chromatids.
* The nuclear envelope starts to break down.
* Spindle fibers begin to form from centrosomes.
#### **Metaphase**
* Chromosomes line up at the cell’s equator (metaphase plate).
* Spindle fibers attach to the centromere of each chromosome.
#### **Anaphase**
* Sister chromatids are pulled apart by spindle fibers.
* They move to opposite poles of the cell.
* Each pole gets an identical set of chromosomes.
#### **Telophase**
* Chromosomes de-condense back into chromatin.
* Nuclear envelopes re-form around the two sets of chromosomes.
* Nucleolus reappears.
* Spindle fibers disassemble.
---
### **Cytokinesis**
* Follows telophase.
* Cytoplasm divides, forming two daughter cells.
* In animal cells: cleavage furrow forms.
* In plant cells: cell
