A covalent bond is established when two or more elements join to complete their valence shell by sharing electrons rather than transferring all of the extra electrons to a fewer electrons element, as is the case with an ionic bond. Because carbon has a valence of 4, it takes a lot of energy to take or release electrons to form ionic bonds; finally, they must form a covalent bond, which involves sharing electrons, to become stable/inert.
