These are two different sentences. When we combine them using a conjunction it becomes a compound sentence.
Compound sentence: She was ill so she was absent.
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses combined by a conjunction. (Clauses are sentences or part of sentences which contains a subject or verb or both subject and a verb)

For instances
Teach is a verb, when you add the suffix '-er' to the word teach it becomes a noun 'Teacher'
