The main thing is to do consistent practice even if it is for 10mins a day. The key is regularity. You can't be sitting one day for 1hr practice and the other day not at all. Their has to be consistent effort. Also, listening to great artists helps. Also, when your playing reaches a certain level jamming with fellow musicians helps a lot.
