Carnatic is a Sanskrit word which means that which is pleasing for the ears. Karna means ear in Sanskrit

Carnatic music is actually called as Sasthreeya or Karnataka Sangeetham which is originated from the 4 south Indian states y famous authors.Then the Karnataka sangeetham became Carnatic music.

the name carnatic came from the tamil word karnadagam.. which means ancient/antique/old... so everyone used to mention that as karnadaga sangeetham.. then they started saying in english as carnatic music

Karnatic or Sastriya sangeetham ( traditonal music) got its name from the South Indian composer-musicians Purandara das, Thyagaraja,Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri and many more descendants. They all hail from South India and hence the name became Carnatic music.
