Useful apps with C, really?
First of all, you need to understand that you can not directly make any useful app with C. Obviously if you make people prefer GUI more nowadays. So thing in which you must focus is building basic concepts with C. Like in my case while building IoT devices my knowledge of C helps me a lot to make an amazing interaction with Arduino and Raspberry Pi or my Linux system. So yeah it helps, believe me.
