Because it answers a fundamental question which can not be derived from first or second law of thermodynamics. Details: Zeroth law states that a body A is in thermal equilibrium with two different bodies B and C then B and C will be in thermal equilibrium with each other. This is very basic concept with is neither obvious nor derivable from the laws discovered prior to this observation. So to give it a rightful place in intellectual discourse it was named as zeroth law of thermodynamics. For further questions contact me. read less

First and second law of thermodynamics have already being stated and proved. Then came the Zeroeth law.But it gives more fundamental details than the former two ones. Hence it is given number before 1 and 2.
Comments

It is called the "zeroth" law because it came to light after the first and second laws of thermodynamics had already been established and named, but was considered more fundamental and thus was given a lower number — zero.

It is more basic in nature than 1st law thts why it comes first in the concepts of thermodynamics.

Hi Vinod, First law talks about condition at thermodynamic equlibrium, whereas zeroth law talks about equilibrium itself. So , as it is more basic than first law it is termed as zeroth law

Mechanical Engineering and +2 subjects tution

Zeroth law was formulated at last. during that time first and second law was formulated. But zeroth law forms the basic of temperature difference . Hence given the name zeroth law.

Tutor Btech, engineering Mechanical Subjects

The property temperature is defined by zeroth law. As temperature is the fundamental property in thermodynamics, the law is given by the name zeroth law.

This is the prerequisite for the first law.

Don't want to over express myself, just join and feel the experience.

Zeroth law is related to equilibrium and equilibrium denotes zero and on number line zero comes before one .
