Torque vs Power – A Simple Explanation
Torque and power are two important concepts in Mechanical Engineering, especially in automobiles and machines.
1. What is Torque?
Torque is the rotational force produced by an engine or machine. It is measured in Newton-metre (N·m).
2. What is Power?
Power is the rate at which work is done. In engines, it tells us how quickly the engine can perform work. Power is commonly measured in kilowatts (kW) or horsepower (HP).
3. Simple Example:
Think of a motorcycle going uphill. Torque helps the motorcycle produce the force needed to climb the slope, while power determines how quickly that work can be performed.
4. Key Difference:
- Torque = Rotational force
- Power = Rate of doing work
The relationship between them is:
Power = Torque × Angular Speed
