The River Adventure
Imagine you are piloting a boat. In a perfectly calm lake, your boat cruises at 18 km/h. You need to travel 24 km, but you are on a river with a current flowing at an unknown speed of x km/h.
The river either works with you or against you:
Downstream (The Joyride): The current pushes you faster. Speed = (18 + x) km/h.
Upstream (The Uphill Battle): You fight the current. Speed = (18 - x) km/h.
The Math Translation
Time equals Distance divided by Speed. We know the upstream struggle took exactly 1 hour longer than the downstream ride:
Since a river cannot flow at a negative speed, we toss out the -54.
The speed of the stream is exactly 6 km/h!
