A covalent bond is a type of bond between atoms by sharing their valence electrons.
In carbon, as they have four valence electrons, it cannot donate or accept remaining electrons because to do so, it has to spend a lot of energy, or it may become unstable.
That's why carbon shares its valence electron with other atoms so that it can fulfil its octet state and remain stable.
