X+ y is an linear equation according to maths........there must be given value for example X+y=3........then in the graph paper the equation comes as a straight line........the X and y values can be both in positive or negative..........for example according to the equation taken abouve.........X values can be 0,1,2,3,-1,-2,6,7 and y values respectively can be 3,2,1,0,4,5,-3,-4 etc.
