So, there are 2 parts in cell cycle. Interphase and then M- phase (also known as mitotic phase).
In Interphase (G1, S, G2)
Interphase is the period between two successive M-phases. It is metabolically active and prepares the cell for division.
G1 Phase (Gap 1)
• The cell is metabolically active and continuously grows.
• No DNA replication occurs during this phase.
S Phase (Synthesis Phase)
• DNA replication occurs, and the amount of DNA per cell doubles.
• However, the chromosome number remains the same.
G2 Phase (Gap 2)
• Proteins are synthesized for mitosis.
• Cell continues to grow and prepares for division.
Then comes M Phase (Mitotic Phase)
This includes the actual process of cell division and is further divided into the following four stages of mitosis:
1. Prophase
• Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes.
• Each chromosome has two chromatids joined at the centromere.
• Spindle fibres begin to form; nucleolus disappears.
2. Metaphase
• Chromosomes are completely condensed and aligned at the equator.
• The spindle fibres attach to the centromeres via kinetochores.
3. Anaphase
• Centromeres split, and the sister chromatids separate.
• They move towards opposite poles.
4. Telophase
• Chromosomes decondense into chromatin.
• Nuclear envelope reforms, and nucleolus reappears.
Hope its all clear to you now!!
