I have taught how to read English using the phonetic system for over 8 years now. Its just not about learning the 44 sounds, but how they combine and blend to form words is most important part of teaching. Teaching phonetics to preschoolers is most challenging, and interesting at the same time as I have to find new ways to teach them and have them engaged. The goal is to teach my students to read fluently, and the phonetic system is fundamental to the language and acquiring the right pronunciations.
