Is online Chinese language coaching much better than Chinese home tuition?

Yes it totally depends on various factors including the competency of teacher

Do tones really matter?

Yes tones are extremely important because if you use the wrong tone, you could be completely misunderstood. For example si4 in the fourth time would mean the number four, whereas si3, the same pronunciation with the third tone would mean die or death. Yes tones are extremely important because if you use the wrong tone, you could be completely misunderstood. For example si4 in the fourth time would mean the number four, whereas si3, the same pronunciation with the third tone would mean die or death. So yes, tones do matter, though that shouldn't be a hindrance to actually start speaking the language with natives as they would surely understand that they're speaking to a beginner
