Nitrogen fixation is a process by which atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted to ammonia (NH3) or other nitrogenous compounds, and this process can be non-biological or biological. Atmospheric nitrogen or elemental nitrogen (N2) is relatively inert. It can't be used directly by plants unless fixed (converted) in a usable format like ammonia by different soil microorganisms- often referred to as nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria.
In the non-biological process, lightning can break the triple bonds of elemental N2, releasing free nitrogen atoms which then reacts with oxygen gas (O2) present in the atmosphere to form NOx (nitrogen oxides). NOx may react with water to make nitrous or nitric acid, which seeps into the soil, where it makes nitrate (NO3-), which is then assimilated by plants or can be re-released into the atmosphere by the process of denitrification.
Nitrogen fixation is essential for all forms of life because nitrogen is required to biosynthesize basic building blocks of plants, animals and other forms of life- for example, nucleotides for DNA, RNA, and amino acids for proteins.
