Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed when electrons are shared between two atoms. An atomic number of carbon is 6, so it has 4 electrons in the valence shell. But losing or gaining 4 electrons is not possible due to energy consideration. So now carbon will follow the octet rule and share electrons to form a covalent bond and attain stability.
