Well, there are 2 things which I guess will make you an expert. 1) Thorough knowledge of Photoshop software itself and various advanced techniques of using Photoshop. 2) Creativity: Artistic skills, color combination, photo-manipulation etc etc. There are various purpose of using Photoshop in different perspectives and different fields. Some of them are Graphic design, DTP, Web layout design, UI Design, Photography, Interior design (many use for final touch). Yet there are several other purpose, few to mention like, u can use it for even creating anime characters and character sets for animation etc. So finally I could say one thing "Photoshop is really very vast subject". Architects and interior designers use them to give a good layout presentation to clients Even for crime scene investigation where they need to get a good latent fingerprints from what is available. Which tool you would prefer to use when you want to crop a human portrait from an image?
I would use a pen tool to exactly cut the human from the image avoiding the things in the background. If the background doesn't matter, we can straight away use crop tool.
