Thinnest strings is 2 and 1. String 1 is thinner most string called by name E. String 2 is called A.

Hi Answer for this particular question varies whether it is applicable for Indian classical or Western violin. If it is Western violin, the initial exercises starts on D string i.e third string from the thinnest string which is first one E string. In initial exercises the scale used is D major. So the strings most used are D and A strings i.e Third and Second strings respectively. In Indian classical, Karnatic violin we tune violin to Sa Pa Sa Pa from Fourth to First (Thinnest) strings respectively. The third and Fourth strings are more used ones as most of the compositions are done in that range. read less
