Hello everyone!! this is Dheeraj again with a tutorial on Fashion illustration, this will be a step-by-step tutorial, where you will learn how to draw a flared skirt.

What you need for this task :

  • Pencils
  • Markers
  • Watercolours that's it

Step 1: Create straight length

Let's start by drawing a the waistband and mark the length you want .have you noticed that both the waistband and the bottom hem are curved. Yes, because this will add realism and life to your illustration.

Step 2: Let's create the outlines of the skirt.

We need to add the skirt outlines connecting the waist to the bottom hem. Important: lines should not be completely straight. The outline pops out close to the waistband to add volume to the skirt.

Step 3: Let's create hemlines now.

As hemline is composed of multiple layers, there won’t be much symmetry in the hem. So follow the hemline direction and make it uneven.

Step 4: Put Flat Colour on the skirt

Let's start colouring the skirt, first start with a flat colour of your choice (make sure colouring should not be patchy if you are using watercolours )

Step 5: Let's create skirt texture now.

Pick a slightly darker colour and draw some lines from the belt down. Notice that not all of them reach the bottom and that they vary in weight. A few shorter lines are starting from the bottom up. They come in different length. Make sure the final result is not too busy.

Step 6: This is the masterstroke now

To create the illusion of transparency in your fashion sketch is quite easy. Merely get a lighter colour than your base and outline the bottom shape. The outline should not be exact. In fact, the more you vary – the better, especially in the bottom hemline.

Step 7: Now let's add the top layer

Use the same lighter colour for shading very similar to the darker on you did before. Start from the waist down. Then make some lines from the hemline up. Check how there is some blank space left between this new layer and the solid one.

Step 8: highlights time

To finish up to get a white gel pen or a white pencil and draw a few lines to strengthen the shapes. You don’t want to bring the hemline from end to end. Be picky in this step. Less is more.

And we are ready to put this illustration in our showreel. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial if "yes" please hit  like button and support me to put more content like this in future ,at the end here is a variation of the same illustration.

I Am...FASHION

Lesson - 1

How to Become a Successful Fashion Designer

Sometimes we feel we have a good flare for fashion, interest in sewing or making clothes, drawing or generally in ‘creating’ things, we feel we can convert it into the profitable business of fashion or be the ‘Fashion Designer’ we see in Vogue. It is true, to the extent that it is a good direction, but not enough to be that successful ‘Fashion designer’ or embark on that fashion venture.

Like every other profession, even fashion comes with a requirement of skill sets and aptitude one needs to excel.

Here are some of the qualities one needs to succeed as a designer-

-Being Creative

You need to have a great sense of style and coming up with new ideas is the life of fashions.

- Drawing Skills

Excellent drawing skills are always a boon to be able to sketch your ideas onto paper for the production process quickly.

-Good Eye for Materials

You have to have an eye for the materials of a garment, as well as the elements that make it unique, such as colour, fabric and trims etc.

-Sewing Skills

One certainly needs to understand the sewing processes so that you can convert your design ideas into a 3D reality. i.e. construct the garments from your design.

-Knowledge of Current Fashion Trends

Fashion is all about what styles are accessible at a particular time. It is essential to be aware of current trends and have a right eye for anticipating what your audience will respond to next.

-Visualization Abilities

One of the highest rated skill and rightly so. Good fashion designers can visualise a garment before putting an idea on paper.

-Good Communication skills

One must have excellent communication skills, as there are many people involved in the creation of a garment and that too of a broad spectrum. One must be able to communicate effectively to everyone to get the results one needs to achieve.

-Team Player

One needs to be able to work amicably with others as part of a team. Designing a garment for production involves the work of many, from pattern making to sewing to shipping. As a designer, you must be able to work well with all involved.

- Business Sense

A successful fashion designer needs to have excellent business skills. You don't just design clothes; you have to be able to sell them profitably to make it a profitable venture. You need to understand budgets, marketing, and sales concepts that are vital to getting designs produced and sold.

Having reviewed this, we may find that this profession needs a diverse skill set, some may come naturally to us, and some we will have to cultivate. It is always wise to ‘know ourselves’ first, evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and work accordingly.

-KNOW YOURSELF

-KNOW YOUR CRAFT (WELL)

-KNOW THE BUSINESS

-KNOW YOUR MARKET

-KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER

ACTIVITY

-Carefully examine yourself in the light list above, and write down the qualities and skills you think you possess and the one ones you need to cultivate

-Start observing

What ‘YOU’ consider fashionable.

What you consider a good design

-Start building a ‘Resource book.’

Start collecting pictures of what’s a good design to you- online as well offline.

Career in Merchandising: “The decisions that a merchandiser makes are crucial to the success of the business.”

What is merchandising?

A merchandiser decides which stock to allocate to which stores and in what quantity. For example, a large store based in Delhi may sell more dresses than a smaller store based in Lucknow. As such, the merchandiser responsible for dresses (or perhaps for clothing in a supermarket) has to decide how many dresses or how many different lines of dresses each store needs. If the merchandiser were to give the smaller store the same amount of stock as the larger store then they may run the risk of not being able to sell it all. This could mean having to pay for the stock to be stored in warehouses. Or it could mean having to sell off the stock at a reduced price in order to get rid of it. Alternatively, if the merchandiser underestimated the amount of stock the larger store would get through it could cause a demand problem.

Customers might not be able to get the product they want and so may turn to a different retailer. The decisions that a merchandiser makes are therefore crucial to the success of the business; if they get it wrong, there could be considerable financial implications.

Merchandisers work closely with buyers to identify any upcoming trends that they need to satisfy. Buyers choose which products the retailer should sell and the merchandisers decide how much of each product to buy and where the stock should be allocated. In order to make these decisions, merchandisers constantly review sales history and monitor how well different products are performing; this helps them to identify which products need restocking and which ones aren’t selling as well as expected. They need to understand customer trends and consider factors such as how variations in footfall and demographic will affect the type and amount of stock required in different stores. The main priority of a merchandiser is to make sure that the departments or stores for which they are responsible meet their sales targets and ensure a healthy profit margin. If margins are below expectations, they will need to analyse the reasons behind this and alert management to the problem.
