Have you ever wondered why some people just seem to have a knack for public speaking...

Is it because their command of English is good? Perhaps

Alternatively, is it something else which also makes a difference?

Well, apart from knowing the language itself, it's also imperative to:

Be confident whilst speaking...

...controlling your Rate Of Speech (ROS) by also introducing pauses whilst speaking

...opening your mouth enough to articulate & pronounce all words clearly

- controlling your breathing whilst talking: observe how singers sing

these 3 factors will ensure speech clarity & good diction whilst you deliver.

Energy & tone are also important - intonation (voice modulation) to vary how you speak is also important. For instance, emphasising something may require you to speak louder or stretch the word by stressing a syllable for longer. Of course, when you're asking a question, that should sound different from an answer!

There should be emotion evident in your voice. This way, you'll sound way more interesting, drawing keen attention from your audience. Such people tend to get noticed easily.

The key to reaching high levels of time management, performance, and productivity is to develop the lifelong habit of tackling your major task first thing each morning.
You must develop the routine of “eating your frog” before you do anything else and without taking too much time to think about it.
Successful, effective people are those who launch directly into their major tasks and then discipline themselves to work steadily and single-mindedly until those tasks are complete.

Let us start with the question “WHY GOAL SETTING”. Well, the answer is profoundly simple because it is utterly profound. And the answer is that if there is no harbour to seek, then probably every wind is the right wind and in the end, the ship will never reach any destination and might get lost in the sea. Goal setting is a mechanism that keeps track of our journey and lets us know whether we made any progress or are we still lurking around our old self.

The truth is that if you want to achieve something in life which resonates with you at a deeper level, you have to set some goals. One has to start somewhere, and the start should be small but consistent. Goals keep you focused, and as the saying goes “Energy flows where the Focus goes”, they are directly related to our success.

To begin your journey into 2019, you may start with setting your personal goals in the following categories. I call them the OCTET of life

  1. Health Goals
  2. Career/ Business/ Professional Goals
  3. Financial Goals
  4. Relationships/ Family Goals
  5. Self Development Goals
  6. Spiritual Goals
  7. Holiday Goals
  8. Philanthropic Goals

It’s always good to know things, “But Knowing is just Knowing, Doing is Doing”. As Earl Nightingale says “Success is the pursuit of a worthy idea”, let that idea for this year be to manage your OCTET of life.

As a trainer, I regularly go through various online and offline resources on different topics, including English, so that I can further improve my teaching techniques and methodologies. In the past couple of years, I've noticed specific peculiar theories and opinions on "how to communicate in English in the right way" that appear on various social media sites. I agree with some points partially, but not on their entirety.

For example, on one platform, I found a speaker claiming that knowledge of grammar is not required to learn English communication, though the speaker is conversing so well without any grammatical error. So the speaker asks the learners to stop learning grammar and start speaking in English to learn English communication. To illustrate it further, the speaker quotes certain strange analogy like how children learn their first language while growing up, i.e. through broken sentences and mistakes. I wonder if everyone has that luxury, especially after reaching a certain age.

On another site, I came across a theory which supports that one doesn't need any verbal words or speech to communicate with others. As per this theory, communication is 90% body language and 10% verbal (Seriously, I have no idea how this proportion is calculated). So you don't need to worry about your vocabulary and sentences. All you need to consider is whether you are able to make your audience understood or not. I doubt if one can communicate complex ideas and concepts through more visual communication or gestures and in fewer words. There are many such vague ideas posted on sites, which are incomplete and confusing. Consequently, Learners fail to understand the right and holistic way of learning English Communication.

From my learning and experience, to learn English in the right direction, one has to first understand the purpose of spoken English from all the angles. It is, of course not for machine learning of grammar, vocabulary, phrases, and sentences and so on. I think spoken English, just like any other language, is meant to communicate our thoughts, effectively, in a smooth and confident tone without interruption and grammar error. It will surely take some time, but that should be the end goal while learning English

Therefore, there are many areas one has to grip upon to learn English effectively, and some of these components are listed as follows.

  • Command on grammar structures and parts of speech
  • Lexical resources, i.e. vocabulary. Knowing two to three synonyms for the same word will serve as a back-up in case you forget one.
  • Body Language (yes it is still needed for effective expression and lasting impact)
  • Knowledge simple to complex sentence structure
  • Idioms, phrases, maxims, metaphor and simile and others to add spice in your language
  • Right pronunciation, accent, diction and voice modulation; I feel if one is speaking fluently but is not able to be understood by others, then the whole purpose of communication is defeated.

Therefore, all the above areas are equally important, and we need to learn and practice them all.
