Hi Kids,
Do you have fear when the teacher is rolling eyes to select the student to answer a question in class? Do you fear that your parents will ask you to talk to relatives in ENGLISH? Do you feel bad when someone starts speaking in English in a group of friends?
IF YES, Then I am going to tell you the reason behind your fear and why the relatives, students and your friends are so good at speaking so fluently. Even you can read and write good English, but when it comes to Speaking English, you start feeling butterflies in your stomach, Right?
There is only one reason:-
"CONFIDENCE"
Confidence helps you to present yourself even if you are not the best candidate/student in a bunch of people. All the parents who want their children to stand out in this crowded, competitive world should work on their confidence.
ALL THE BEST!

Speaking in public in front of the audience always creates a kind of unease in most of us. We have people undergoing fear when they face strangers. But we have been speaking in public right from childhood in an informal way example in front of friends. Here we never experienced this fear. One would ask that then why does one fear when we grow up and need to communicate the same way in corporate life.

This reason attributed to this is our Comfort Zone. Once we could strike a comfort zone with our audience, then you see yourself breathing normally and shoulders, arms and lets relaxing. After this, you are in the ZONE(COMFORT).

There certain three basic thumb rules while presenting.

1. Speech – The basic necessity for speech in the knowledge of the language is Words.

“Words have magical power. They can either bring the greatest happiness or the deepest despair.” Sigmund Freud

2. Body movements – While presenting not only your mouth speaks but also your whole body. The hands to be above the waist level and should move according to the tenor of your speech. For beginners, they should be at ease with both legs equally divided to take your weight. You can move around- Front, Left, Right based on requirement when addressing a particular part of the audience and move back to centre.

3. Connect to as many individuals in the audience as possible by looking towards them. A word of caution that your gaze should be temporary and you can move on to another person.

The above are some basic points to make you start off on a journey and remember that PRACTICE MAKE ONE PERFECT.

Thanks and Bye for now

1. Always write on a topic that is close to your heart - a topic that moves you, stirs emotions in you.

2. After you have picked up a topic of your choice, start writing on it your thoughts in your own words. You can take content from other sources also but ensure that you do not resort to simple copy-paste. Wherever you are picking up content from other sources, give credit to the source.

3. Go through your content 5-6 times before you make your first baseline.

4. By this time you will have developed the speech structure in your mind. This will help you in visualizing the major features of the speech.

5. Take a break of few hours to half / one day before you start practising your speech. This is the cooling off period but helps greatly in speech internalization. Because in this period you keep the speech skeleton in your mind and keep adding features to it for enhancement. The features can be drama, dialogue, voice modulation, body language, props, and stage movement.

6. After the cooling off period, you start practising the speech. You can divide your speech into 4-5 major parts and recall key features, dialogues, words/phrases of each part. Also, recall the transition words/phrases from one part to the other. These will help in ensuring that you do not miss on the major/critical features of the speech.

7. Rest is practice. The more you practice, the better you get on your speech. Enjoy this part and keep thinking of enhancing the speech.

8. Relax on the speech day and enjoy your time on the stage.

Leaders and their leadership skills are assessed very often on the basis of their presentation when they are in front of an audience. Communication is definitely one of the most imperious elements of leadership skills.

Several of us need to give speeches, lectures, presentations, or involve in the communication of additional type to a group of onlookers at a certain point in our lives. The very thought of making public speeches is alarming for quite a lot of people. With regard to talking before a get-together, many of us tend to be exceptionally anxious while some have considerable experience but would like to make perfection in their performance and skills.

If one desires to be a leader, then one wants to be a good communicator. This is where the importance of the role of public speaking skills is well-thought-out. Every part of the management skills includes public speaking skills.

All reaches the final 3 C’s: Leaders challenge, Leaders Change and Leaders Connect.

a) Leaders Challenge: People will turn towards an individual who has the self-confidence to venture forward and speak before an audience of twenty, forty or four hundred individuals and they would consider you as the spokesperson and leader.

 b) Leaders Change: In standing and giving a dialogue in a way which is strong and effective, you are talking in a way which would convert the minds of the people concerning something. In case one is able to master these public speaking skills, changing minds and hearts and figuring out on how to induce, you would be now having one of the significant features of leadership skills.

c) Leaders Connect: People “purchase” individuals. As a speaker who is inspiring, you would figure out how to be passionate at the correct time and susceptible at the correct time. People would be able to have a link with you more as a person.

Can communication skills be taught?

My answer to this question, despite being a communication skills trainer myself, is 'No'. This may come as a surprise to many and I am sure the whole fraternity of communication skills trainers would be up in arms to take a stab at me as soon as they read this. But before anybody strikes a deadly blow to me, let me clarify my stand.

What I mean by communication skills cannot be taught is that I don't believe communication skills can be taught like a course and that's because in my view weak communication skills is symptom of a problem and not the problem itself. Therefore the first task for any communication skills training program should be the diagnosis of the root problem. A cookie cutter approach without diagnosis of the problem is hardly likely to yield any results.

So the next logical question would be – what are some of the root causes of weak communication skills? Of course there are some usual suspects such as lack of confidence, poor language skills and social anxiety. However, weak communication skills can also stem from such root causes as becoming a prisoner of your own public image, extreme negative thinking, inability to confront and low self-esteem. Some of these causes are even inter-related. For example –low self-esteem would lead to lack of confidence and negative thinking.

Most people also wrongly assume that communication skills is synonymous with language skills. Well, language skills is only a subset of communication skills and therefore cannot be synonymous. It always helps if one possesses good language skills but even with average language skills one can become a great communicator. At the heart of it, communication is all about structuring your ideas and conveying them, and you can do that through words, gestures, eyes or body language. There cannot be a greater communicator than the one who is able to structure his thoughts precisely and concisely and then transmit his ideas and emotions to others in exactly the same form without any distortion or noise. Whether you employ simple language or very ornate language, you grammar was impeccable or there were mistakes, you communicated through language or gestures to achieve this is completely inconsequential as long as others understand your ideas and feel your emotions without much distortion.

Is body language something that you should learn? Ever noticed how your body language automatically changes depending on whether you are feeling confident or diffident. So body language only seems to be an expression of what you are feeling inside. It’s your body telling the world about your current mental state and if you force your body to convey something other than your mental state, it only comes across as highly artificial. That’s why I believe that a trainer should not focus on body language but body etiquettes. Etiquettes can be learnt and practiced but body language should not be forced. Let your body talk freely and openly and if something needs to be changed that’s within you and not outside.

Does it mean that seeking help to improve communication skill is futile? Absolutely not. A good mentor can work with you to help you overcome the root problems while imparting necessary foundation skills (such as audience analysis, voice intonations and modulations) and helping you identify the root problems and overcome them.
