Many among us react based on perception. Perception is opinion or feeling. It is not a reality. When you react to someone with perception and not on reality, there are chances that perceptions can be wrong.

once reacted, words cannot be taken back. Even expressing sorry is not enough. Hurt feeling linger for longer time. This can even spoil relation.

So be aware of full reality before you answer. Let their be response not reaction. Positive response has positive impact.

Simple concept is quite useful in life in all stages of life and in all interpersonal interactions.

The importance of career counselling are as follows:

Choosing the right career path at the right time is very important, this requires expertise, careful planning and execution at the right moment, once the time is lost it becomes tough for the individual to go back and make the changes. This process can be very tedious as it involves brainstorming, figuring out the likes and dislikes, understanding the interests and values, gauging the individuals numerical, logical ability, keeping in mind the market trends, and industry standards to make the right choice, while selecting the right career path.

Parents and their children are now more aware and are making informed decisions while planning or helping them choosing a suitable career. Parents with their children now want to understand the child’s personality types, interests’ levels and like to understand and learn about the career paths before guiding their children.

Career planning and development are two challenging terms/ when it comes to right career paths. Parents and children have to be in sync while figuring out the suitable career. Once the children reach 9th grade, most parents devote their time to reading, understanding and gathering information about the new trends and changing market conditions and industry standards. That’s when they start looking for proper career counselling and reach out to trained professionals to get the right answers. It involves finding a trained counsellor, who would not only guide them but also help them make an informed/suitable decision. This process can be very stressful, as we do have a lot of options or career paths to choose from.

A trained career counsellor identifies the right skills, interests, and talents in the candidate by using a few tools and assessments which, shows the desired results. Multiple reports get generated keeping in mind their abilities and interest’s levels this helps them prove their suitability, which can play an important role in choosing the right career paths. Planning this at the right time and getting the desired help at the correct time is very important, falling to do this at the right time can cause unnecessary stress. Making the time planning and choosing to visit a career counsellor can help many talented students find the right career path and have them pick the desired/ suitable career, which will keep them stress-free happy and provide them job satisfaction.

Many students lose out on this window of opportunity as they are preoccupied with other things, most procrastinate, and miss the bus and end up choosing the wrong career not suitable for their personality types, their abilities and talents, which lead to unnecessary stress. Peer pressure or pressure from the extended family may also cause chaos.

Providing the needed support and guidance by helping them choose the right careers requires detail knowledge of their personality types, skills, abilities, their learning styles and their thinking patterns.

Discovering the interest’s levels and gauging their potential at the right time is very important many preparatory schools are now hiring counsellors in schools and are conducting these assessments in schools to assess their readiness and help them make the right career paths. Qualified career counsellors have the ability in identifying their personality type, the career interests, career values and career paths and the skills abilities, and help in choosing the right career path suitable for a stress-free and happy life.

Choosing a right career is as important as choosing a life partner. There is an element of compatibility in both. The moment we miss this element in making a choice, we have to rely on destiny. We are taking chances. It is simple as well as complex. Simple because if you know yourself well, then you know what to choose. Complex because if you do not know yourself well, then you will go through the complexity of information coming from different sources: internet, social media, peers, family, teachers etc., which conflicts with what you are comfortable with.

Every person is different in terms of perceptions, preferences, likes-dislikes, interests, talents, passions and behaviours. There is something right for everybody, provided we know what it is. And therefore, everybody can’t have the same profession. You have to choose what is right for you.

If your education (especially the degree and PG) is not right, somewhere, the foundation gets weak. Right education for you is the one with which you intellectually & emotionally connect. Understand it with ease. Moreover, feel like acquiring more knowledge in that field.

Since we acquire a degree & PG to build a career, the same should relate to the work/job that you want to pursue for 30+ years of your life, so that you ultimately become an expert.

With my experience at I.I.T. Bombay for ten years and five years at Oracle, I realised, that if observed over an extended period, people achieve success and get respect mainly on account of their Expertise. One has to be an expert on something to gain respect and success. An expert is a person who solves complex problems in a particular domain, (say marketing, HR, literature, theatre, business). He/she should be able to address practical issues (of that domain) in an uncertain situation consistently, efficiently, happily, perfectly, speedily and energetically. So, to become an ‘expert’, you need to choose the right education, profession or job.

3. Just being good at your work is not good enough.
 
4. You may not like networking and relationship building but individual contributor roles won't take you far. Eventually, it is working with people, influencing them, inspiring them. Knowing people and able to deliver in teams is non-negotiable. 
 
5. Getting along with peers and juniors is as essential as managers. Step up your game. 
 
6. People should want to hire you and they should want to be on your team. Then you are on the right track.
 
7. Understanding and being able to navigate corporate maze is critical. 
 
8. You can not just stop learning because now you have landed a job. That era is long gone where you get a degree and then basis that degree you work n earn for rest of your life. Now all of us are lifelong learners. What you are learning right now may be redundant next year. Brace up.
 
9. People at work are not logical, rational and fair at all times. The good news is you do not have to “fix them”. The bad news is that you do have to learn to work around them. All you can change is yourself, and sometimes, that changes everything.
 
10. Everyone wants to learn soft skills. If there is one soft skill you have time and motivation to learn - try listening. Active listening. Listening without interrupting. Listening with an open mind. Listening without judging. Listening without sharing your opinion or giving advice unless asked. Listening without checking your phone. Just listen.

There are many leadership roles in the software industry, such as Team Lead, Senior Developer, Architect, Technical Lead, Manager, and many more! This article is for all those readers who really like to lead the team towards success.

When I first started programming, I always had one goal to achieve, that is, just to deliver the assigned tasks. It was easy. But unfortunately, we cannot develop large scale applications alone, we need a large team. Even in this scenario, we still have a goal to achieve, however, now we have a lot more people that we need to think about. Here comes the real challenge!

Everyone knows what the goal is, conceptually. But in reality, what happens is over time, people start going in different directions!! Therefore, this is one of the areas that a Tech lead should concentrate on. For example, if 10 people work on a code base with a different attitude and different understanding, it will become very difficult for someone new to understand the code base!! He/she will be lost!

So, the solution is the Lead should make sure that at the end of the day, the entire code base should look like it was written by a single person. In the IT world, we call it "consistent code". So, being a technical lead, our responsibility should be to train and direct people towards writing a consistent code and reaching that goal. Now, do you think it really happens in reality ? NO, but the bottom line is the technical lead should make sure there is consistency in code development by everyone in the team.

Here are a few points I feel the Lead should keep in mind, along with the above activity:

i. Career growth for team members:

As a lead, help team members to keep in touch with latest technology. Motivate the team to obtain certification in technology, and make sure you also have a number of certificates in your bag :). Keep sending useful hints, article links etc. related to current tasks.

ii. Diversity:

It's always important to value the diversity of the team we have. If a group of people work by themselves, it won't make any sense. The Leader should always focus on making people talk to each other and integrate their thought processes. As long as we have trust between each other, there is no looking back! The team will succeed.

iii. Plan for Brown Bag sessions:

Brown-bag session refers to an informal meeting, training, or presentation that happens at the workplace.

iv. Plan for Pair Programming:

Always try to see if pair programming works for your team. If yes, then go for it.

v. Join hands for coding:

One of the elements of an effective lead is, programming. Generally at-least 30% of the time of a lead must go in coding with the team.

Most importantly, never expect someone to be outstanding in each and everything he/she does. Everyone has their own skill sets; so make sure to use them in the right place. If someone is good in JavaScript and not so great in C#, then do not assign them the task of writing C# Server side code. Try to make them contribute on client side logics.

*Note: Make sure to assign them simple tasks in C#, which will help them learn slowly with expertise in C#. Help them to achieve a better understanding in an area they lack.

Let's move towards advanced processes like Agile!

Now, what if you are following the Agile process ?

In Agile, we never elect a lead. We have a scrum master in Agile, so where does the team lead fit in? The important point to make is, the scrum master is just a facilitator. He/she is responsible for retrospectives, sprint planning, and sprint reviews,and also shielding the team from interruptions during the sprint.

Note: Role of scrum master is out of scope for this article, so let me concentrate on Lead's role in Agile projects.

In Agile Team, one of the experienced developers who has capabilities to lead the team will act as Technical Lead in reality. (Even though there is no concept of Lead in Agile). Be top on delivery risks of technical tasks. If you see any risk in developing some feature on a committed time line, then resolve it. Work with a team to come up with a better design and architecture. Always be in touch with business and sense upcoming requirements. Encourage the team.
