You can start any amount you have. Actually amount of invetsment depends upon the prevailing market rate of choosen stock multiplied by quantity. Suppose you have choosen to buy one share of RELIANCE today , you have to invest 985 (todays price) * 1=985+ rates&taxes. it will be around 990.
