For years, I believed students struggled in Mathematics because they couldn't understand the chapter.
Today, I think many of them struggle because nobody checks whether they are ready for the chapter.
Imagine teaching Linear Equations to a child who is still unsure about integers, sign rules, BODMAS, or adding like terms.
When the child makes mistakes, we often conclude,
"The concept is weak."
But what if the concept isn't the problem?
What if the foundation is?
This thought has led me to rethink the way I design lessons at Nian's Learning Hub.
Instead of beginning with a chapter, I want to begin with a Learning Readiness Check.
Before teaching any concept, I want to ask:
✔ Can the student apply BODMAS correctly?
✔ Can the student work confidently with integers?
✔ Do they understand the difference between like and unlike terms?
✔ Can they interpret mathematical statements correctly?
✔ Do they know why a mathematical step is performed, rather than simply memorising a rule?
Only after identifying these prerequisite skills should teaching begin.
The framework I am developing is simple:
Learning Readiness Rubric → Diagnostic Assessment → Teacher Observation → Targeted Remedial Practice → Concept Teaching → Exit Check
The purpose is not to label students as weak.
The purpose is to identify the exact brick missing from the foundation so that learning becomes easier, confidence grows, and Mathematics becomes less intimidating.
Perhaps we don't need more worksheets.
Perhaps we need better diagnosis before instruction.
As teachers, maybe our greatest responsibility is not to ask,
"Why can't this child solve this chapter?"
Instead, we should ask,
"Which prerequisite skill did we assume the child already had?"
This is a small idea that I am trying to develop for Nian's Learning Hub, where every diagnostic is followed by a focused remedial plan before moving ahead with the concept.
I'd genuinely love to know how fellow educators identify learning gaps before introducing a new topic.
