In my opinion; just as everything has two sides depending upon the intention behind it; same is with public speaking. For example; science and social media can be used both mindfully as well as mindlessly. Similarly, in the case of public speaking; the speaker's knowledge and intention play a significant part. If the speaker has a well-rounded knowledge on the subject and has the intention to educate others; public speaking is definately a boon. But if the speaker has a well-rounded knowledge on the subject but wants to manipulate his/her audience for personal gains; then public speaking becomes a bane. I hope that answers your question.
