NITROGEN FIXATION is the process by which molecular nitrogen on the air is converted into ammonia or other nitrogenous compounds in the soil. Plants cannot directly use nitrogen from the air; therefore, the process of nitrogen fixation is of high importance in the atmosphere.
ORGANISMS responsible for nitrogen fixation are Azotobacter and Archaebacteria. Leguminous plants that contain root nodules possess such microorganisms in them which helps the plant for N2 fixation from the air.
