If is depend on the Functionality in homepage . Generally you can automate 2-3 small automated test case without validation . and 1 Test case with full validation and you can check end to end functionality .

Do not go for syntactical error and concentrate on the logic, automatically it will come slowly. For that you start slowly, then build your logic, start with 1 hour or so, then gear up...
