Aparajita Burjwal

Extensively trained in various modern forms, release technique and choreography.

About Aparajita Burjwal

I am a contemporary dance choreographer, teacher and practitioner. I began my professional training at the age of 16, in the year 2010, with Ashley Lobo’s “Danceworx Academy” in New Delhi. I trained there for a period of 3.5 years and learned forms like lyrical jazz and contemporary. In the year 2013, I decided to join one of my teacher’s dance company – “Art in Motion” that was predominantly a modern dance company. I learned various techniques like Graham, Cunningham and Limon. However, our major focus was Horton. I trained and performed with them for a period of 2 years, during which I did two professional shows in the year 2014.

In 2015, I decided to branch out and explore myself as a dancer independently. I attended Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company’s summer intensive in July, went to Bangalore (India) to train with “Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts” for a month and finally went to Italy to attend the NOD program where I got an opportunity to train under dancers from the Batsheva Dance company, L-E-V, Hofesh Shecter etc.

Since 2016, I have been more inclined to choreography and have been working towards building my own choreographic repertoire under the name "Vibgyor". I have traveled with my work to Mumbai and Bangalore - where we got an overwhelming response. I have also recently opened my own dance studio in Sector 45, Gurgaon called "Redanse studios" where we work on the philosophy of building a community rather than just giving classes.

About the Course

This course will focus on the training method widely used by contemporary dancers - release technique. Technique is a term loosely used for release work as it is not a fixed set of combinations, routines or steps but rather an exploratory tool. It uses breath, alignment, imagery and core strength to uplift a dancer. We shall be exploring this extensively in our classes.

Another aspect that we will explore is improvisation - a tool used both for choreography and to get a better understanding of their own bodies by dancers and choreographers alike. It helps a dancer to better understand their own vocabulary and how they move naturally. The term 'improvisation' essentially refers to dancing without any fixed choreography and simply responding to the music, surroundings or the given context.

We will also be doing fixed warm-up and cool-down routines.
