Wavelength is a technical measure of colour. Wavelength will be variable because it is the distance between two crests in the wave. In a vacuum, it is just white light which propagates while in normal conditions the principles of scattering come in which results in millions of colours. Frequency is inversely proportional to wavelength, and as Yasha said, it is easier to measure.
