Yes, there was a period in the early 20th century, during the Soviet era, when an effort was made to transition the Russian language to the Latin alphabet. However, this transition was temporary and the Cyrillic script was reintroduced later on.

We say "zdravstvuyte" to old or unknown people. It means "hello". It's formal. We say "privet" to close relatives like parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends, as well. It means "hi". It's very informal.
